The Spirits Rejoice Session Photographs by Guy Kopelowicz
Spirits Rejoice was recorded at Judson Hall in New York on 23rd September, 1965. The musicians at the session were: Donald Ayler (trumpet), Charles Tyler (alto), Albert Ayler (tenor), Henry Grimes, Gary Peacock (bass) and Sunny Murray (drums). Call Cobbs also played harpsichord on one track, ‘Angels’. Also at the session was the legendary photographer, W. Eugene Smith, who had been working with jazz musicians for a while. And then there was Guy Kopelowicz, a young journalist from France who was writing a series of articles for Jazz Hot about the avant-garde scene in New York. Some of the photos Guy took at the session accompanied his Jazz Hot articles and some were also published elsewhere (including Jazz Monthly in Britain). In August 2010 Guy emailed to say that he’d just found the negatives of the photos he’d taken at Judson Hall and which he thought he’d lost. He kindly offered to let me put them on the site and here they are. Guy sent me fifteen prints and I scanned them at their original size, as seen below. Guy’s article about Ayler, ‘Autumn in New York’ (published in Jazz Hot in December, 1965), is available on the site (in French), and Guy also contributed a piece (in English) to the Ayler Remembered section, with his memories of the Spirits Rejoice session. Finally, I’d like to thank Guy for letting me have the photos for the site and (although I realise this is the internet) I would like to state that the copyright for all the images remains with Guy Kopelowicz and I would appreciate it if that was respected. |
