An article by Robert Ostermann from the National Observer entitled ‘The Moody Men Who Play the New Music’ was printed on the inner sleeve of some early versions of Bells. A transcription of the article is also available in the Archives.

Bells promo copy

In 2016 the following item appeared on ebay (asking price: $650):

ALBERT AYLER bells - rare PROMO TORTOISE SHELL VINYL SILK SCREENED COVER stamped

amazing unknown variation MONO w/ promo stamps & inner

ARTIST : ALBERT AYLER

TITLE : BELLS

LABEL & CATALOG NUMBER : ESP-DISK / 1010

FORMAT : ONE-SIDED LP

COVER CONDITION : EX blank white cover with screen printed bright red text front. mono cover (with 'stereo' omitted from from the printed text) & two promo stamps front. very slight wear only. with printed inner sleeve (VG torn).

VINYL CONDITION : VG+ amazing tortoise-shell vinyl with blue swirls & screen printed white text. looks navy blue in normal light but bursts with color & texture when illuminated. various hairlines & minor surface marks. no "by albert ayler" or "stereo" text (mono copy). plays great & loud with some mild surface noise like all copies. nice clear bright screen printing.

NOTES : quite rare & cool 1st press MONO PROMO copy, and another great variation of this release. this one has a blank white cover with screen printed bright red text front & two very cool "THANKS, MR. DJ FOR YOUR ESP" stamps. pressed on amazing tortoise-shell vinyl with light blue swirls! the vinyl looks like an un-assuming grey navy blue until you get some light behind it. disc has nice clear screen printed art in white ink. no "by albert ayler" or "stereo" text on disc. we have never seen or heard of a another copy on this color vinyl. includes the rare liner notes printed inner sleeve… one of the most iconic of the ESP releases, and by far the one with the most cover art & pressing variations. there are at least 20 variations of this lp, and likely far more. you could spend your whole life trying to find them all, so we've decided to offer up a handful of the rarest & most unique copies from this collection, with more to come.’
